I found this idea online, and my students really love it so I
wanted to share it. As a part of my community helpers theme, I created a post
office at my desk. I introduced this
after learning about how the mail works, and discussing that you need to buy
stamps and put them on envelopes before the mail man can take them. I posted the
prices for envelopes and stamps at the front of my desk, creating the “Post
Office.” There is a jar of pennies on my desk as well. When the students want to
write a letter to a friend or their parents they have to buy it from me. They
get the jar and count out the right amount of pennies they need to buy the
materials they want. The stamps are a
verity of cheap stickers I bought at wal-mart, and I just got the envelopes at
the dollar store. Once they have the stamp and the envelope they write a letter,
fold it up and seal the envelope. To deliver their mail they sometimes use mail
carrier bags I have in the dramatic play area or the mail man hat. They can
either put their letter in a friend’s cubby or in their backpack if it is going
home. I just really liked this activity because it was easy to do and
incorporates counting, writing, and social studies all in one. Once we do this
for a bit longer I am thinking about expanding by having the students earn the
pennies and also make their own mailboxes for people to leave notes in. I hope
this can work in some of your classrooms!

Article on Numeracy -- From Laura E
From Laura -- I found this article, (might just be printed from our HS Bible) but thought it could help us this week as we focus on Numeracy!! It just reminds us of some ways to intentionally set up classrooms to allow for the learning, and thus collection, of math COR categories to occur.
Video on Block Play -- From Laura E
Laura from Independence shared this video on the value of block play. It has some great reminders about why play is so important for our kids!

Button & Cork Builders -- From Erin
I saw this idea on one of my favorite sites -- No Time for Flash Cards -- and I can't wait to try it. I already bought the corks at Target for $10. You can also find corks at most craft stores. Both of my classes have been really into building this year, so I'm excited to try this fun, new manipulative in class! I think it would make a very interesting small group to see if kids could figure out which side of the velcro they need to put together. It could also be used for planning by creating towers on pictures of different centers and seeing how many kids go to each center.
Let me know if anyone else tries this idea!
I Am In Preschool
Stephanie found this great quote and made it up in photoshop. It would be great to print out and hang in your classroom!

Aligning COR to the State Standards
Angela sent me this file that aligns the COR to the Illinois Early Learning Standards. I put it on the Assessment page, but I had forgotten to write up a post about it. This will be especially useful when writing IEP goals that align with the COR and the Illinois Early Learning Standards. You can access the file thought the link in this post as well as on the Assessment page.
Thanks Angela!

Using Styrofoam Containers
We received this idea in the curriculum question box. It would be great for work time or for small group. Thanks to whoever submitted this.
"Sorry, no picture to go along, took too long to download. I got a styrofoam container from the grocery store to recycle, and some golf tees, and play hanmers. The students can pound like nails. Can also extend in different ways in the classroom with numbers and being creative."
What are some other ways people are using styrofoam containers in their classrooms?

COR Tip
We received this tip in the curriculum question box. Thank you to whoever submitted it!
If you want to change a score that is already inputed onto online COR, go to click on child, click on manage anecdotes, go to ʺAdd another scoreʺ. Then you can delete the old score without deleting the anecdote and you can add in the new score.
